Matt and Dave take a deep dive in the further temporal shenanigans of Marty and the Doc. Find out how short shift can be made of the standard paradoxes of time, and what time travel films in general and the Back to the Future trilogy in particular seem to explore. Along the way we have a close encounter with Trump, get caught up in family values, and see how the film can be said to affirm multiplicity.

DEEPER DIVES & CONTINGENT TANGENTS?
> You can check out more on what Matt was telling us about how Crispin Glover wasn’t in Back To The Future II because he didn’t like its capitalist Message, with this Giant Freakin Robot article from Saralyn Smith.
> If you’d like to follow-up on the different types of temporal affects, spatial discontinuities, and multiplicities of the subject, see Dave’s essay in the Film-Philosophy journal ‘Deleuze’s Three Syntheses Go to Hollywood: The Tripartite Cinema of Time Travel, Many Worlds and Altered States’ (2019). It was shortlisted for the journal’s 2020 prize… but was beaten by something much better!
ERRATA
> Dave says “vistaslide” (repeatedly) – it’s vistaglide.
> Matt says that Crispin Glover leaves the series because of criticism of the capitalist nature of the film. The story seems actually to be that the producers and Glover failed to come to terms on him appearing in the second film due to the treatment of the character and things he was asked to do, which he took to be revenge for his anti-capitalist criticisms of the first film. See further reading above.
